Well-formulated hair products created with nourishing ingredients are great to have on hand; but what happens if you're in a pinch, on a budget, or just looking for something you can do yourself? Instead of heading to the beauty store or salon, head for the kitchen — because you're likely to have some of the best ingredients for your hair sitting in your pantry.
1. Green Tea
Green tea's super powers work wonders on the human body from head to toe, thanks to its catechins, which contain 5-alpha-reductase inhibiting properties. These can help block DHT, which is one of the biggest causes of hair loss. Additionally, one study that worked on rodents found that the polyphenols in green tea prevented hair loss.
To use, brew three to four cups of it, depending on how much hair you've got. Let the tea cool, and pour it on your damp hair. Let it sit for 10 minutes before shampooing out. Try using this two or three times a week.
2. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is another ingredient that can solve a variety of bodily issues, one of which is troublesome hair. Because it's rich in medium-chain triglycerides, it penetrates deep into your hair shafts and encourages growth. Not only can it improve your hair health, but it can prevent future damage from occurring and protects hair that's been chemically treated.
3. Honey
Honey is an emollient and helps seal moisture in your hair, keeping it hydrated and preventing breakage. It can also help strengthen the follicles and slow down hair loss. Additionally, it's packed with antioxidant properties, helping to keep not just your locks but also your scalp healthy. Honey is surprisingly antibacterial and antiseptic, meaning it can prevent infections and aid in calming down dandruff.
Try one of these honey hair masks.
4. Eggs
Fried, scrambled, or poached, eggs are delicious; but did you know they also belong in your hair? Because hair is composed largely of protein, and eggs contain a good amount of proteins themselves, they're good for supporting hair growth, making strands stronger, and fixing previous damage. Here's one way to use eggs in your hair.
5. Avocado
Besides being the perfect snack and salad topping, avocado is great for your hair, thanks to all of its vitamin A, D, E, B6, protein, amino acids, folic acid, copper, iron, and magnesium. An avocado's oil can actually penetrate and moisturize your locks. Use it in your hair for stronger, more radiant strands, and a healthy, moisturized scalp.
